Definition, Resolution and Image Size

Starting from a digital image that was taken by a camera or scanned in, what should we do to print it, put it on the web, see it on a screen?

First we need to understand the characteristics of an image and how to judge visible quality.

Then we need to know what to do for each case:

  1. present on the screen (e.g. www page)
  2. print photos
  3. print texts and diagrams

The images used here can be downloaded if you want to work on them:  1.3MB (2569x1920 straight from the camera, best quality); 455kB (800x600 high quality); 82kB (800x600 medium quality) and 44kB (800x600 low quality).  Since they were taken by me, they are royalty free.
